Episode 9: Stream If You Want To Go Faster

Story and Ben return in a new ELM episode, this time looking at the impact of streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have on our movie watching habits. Does streaming change the way we buy movies? How much stock do we still put in physical media? And how does original content from streaming services change we way we look at long-form storytelling? There’s only one way to find out, give us a listen!

Other highlights include looking into the WWE Network, how streaming service catalogues rotate and Story’s incorrect opinion of Batman films.

Episode 8: Ghostbumps

Story and Ben deliver a spooky edition of the ELM podcast by turning their attention to Horror movies. In an episode not even the mighty technological gods could sabotage, we look at how Horror is integrated into different genres, how many of its movies become full fledged franchises and how virality helped the likes of Paranormal Activity and The Ring.

Other highlights include Story being creeped out by Leatherface’s dad, how Saw tricked Ben out of being a hipster and the sound basketball logic missing from Teen Wolf. Remember, fans: don’t play God with nature!

Episode 7: The Marvelous World of Graphic Novels

Back again to talk about something very near to their hearts are Story and Ben, delving into the murky, crowded and stupidly fun waters of the graphic novel world. Not keen to just gush over our favourite heroes, we take a critical look at the genre; discussing if superhero movies have become too crowded, how X-Men managed to balance its various timelines and the improving relationship between film studios and graphic novel creators.

Other highlights include Ben’s terrible monetisation plans, how Bruce Wayne loves stopping being Batman, wondering why superheores don’t solve world problems and Ben’s motto “It’s not good. I own it”. This truly is a new era of learning about things!

Episode 6: Welcome to Sportscentre

ELM’s newest episode takes Story and Ben into the montage-ridden world of sports movies. It’s time to channel of all our heart, to ask if movies are hurt by their need to include sports, how they keep on-screen action exciting and the evolution of the Rocky franchise.

Other highlights (after excuses for lateness) include Story pitching his dream Magic Johnson/Larry Bird movie, Ben finally getting to talk ‘White Men Can’t Jump’ and the lackluster finish to Bennett Miller’s ‘Foxcatcher’.

Episode 5: Bad To The Bone

Another absence brings another episode (eventually!) as this time ELM shifts from the mission brief to look at the bad side of film. We’ll be discussing the ‘so bad it’s good’ culture of movies, our personal least favourite films, the culture of reviews in general and what it takes to actually ‘hate’ a film.

Other highlights include our simple suggestion of simply putting Michael Shannon in everything, Story ‘not’ going on a tirade about Godzilla, taking a quick pot-shot at the Welsh and an old friends rears his ugly head once again.

Episode 4: Technically Impressive (The Best Kind Of Impressive)

After an absence that involved much personal moving and shaking, ELM is back to dive once again into the pool of cinematic goodness. This time we look behind the camera at some of the more technical aspects of film and see what different methods are used to create specific effects in film. Included are a discussion on lengthy single takes, special vs practical effects and Stanley Kubrick basically being a goddamn wizard.

Other highlights are the team discussing how the internet works, their mutual hatred of the UK weather, Story’s (unprompted) university course and grade information and Ben squeezing in two Buffy references for good measure. It’s warm and crunchy, the way the internet should be!

Episode 3: Three-peating Franchises

Our third episode takes you through the confusingly titled world of film trilogies, as well as those that just couldn’t stop themselves from going even further and create whole new cinematic universes. Welcome to trilogies and world building!

This week Story and Ben rattle through some kick-ass trilogies as well as discussing: how some trilogies work thematically, what Nolan didn’t get quite right in his Batman films, how non-comic fans tackle the Marvel cinematic universe and if we want a new film from the world of Blade Runner.

Other highlights include Ben being allowed to like Highlander, Story loving Lee Van Cleef, how crappy practical and CG special effects differ and a quick rundown of everything Prometheus managed to get wrong.

Enjoy and get thinking, what new franchise movies do you want to see, and which really should’ve stopped?
